FUN STUFF TO READ, LEARN, & DO

“The plastic pollution problem does not start at the middle of the ocean; it does not start on our shores or in our rivers. It starts on land. Solutions should be found on land, its source.

~Merijn Tinga, Dutch environmental activist and Plastic Soup Surfer

FUN STUFF TO LEARN:

CORKS!

Cork is a natural, biodegradable, and renewable resource. The tree bark is harvested by hand every 9-12 years to use for various products, most often wine corks. Not a single tree (they can live up to 300 years!) is cut down during cork extraction.

How to recycle:

  • Call your local wine shop to see if they take them (like Good Grapes in Winnetka)
  • Look for a Recork collection point near you
  • There’s a mail-in option with Cork Club
  • Terracyle has a for-pay zero waste box you can order

Or reuse/repurpose:

  • Keep them out of the landfill by remaking corks into other things. Pinterest has lots of ideas.

FUN STUFF TO DO:

2 minutes of your time
Got 2 minutes to be an eco warrior? Of course you do.

  • Grab a bucket
  • Head to a public place like the beach, park, alley, or schoolyard
  • Set the timer for 2 minutes
  • Pick up trash in the allotted time
  • Take a photo of the contents in the bucket and post on Instagram #2minutehq

Look at all this trash I found at our local beach! It’s the small plastic pieces that cause harm to animals because they mistake it for food. Toss all of your items into the garbage, except for plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans, which can be recycled. I donated the big green sports bottle to Goodwill.
