FUN STUFF TO LEARN:
What are food miles, and how can we cut down on them?
-
- The distance food has traveled to get to your plate.
- Food must travel from the farm it is grown on or the factory it is made into a supermarket or shop to be sold.
- Strawberries grown and sold at a local farm have traveled very few food miles before they reach our plate.
- However, oranges grown in Spain and then transported to our supermarkets by plane and truck have traveled a lot further.
- Consider buying from a farmers market or CSA.
- Select items that are made locally or at the very least from the same continent!
FUN STUFF TO DO:
Reduce your daily microplastic intake.
-
- drink filtered tap water
- avoid plastic water bottles
- don’t reheat food in plastic containers in the microwave
- store food in plastic-free containers
- replace your plastic cutting boards with bamboo or wood
